2024年2月16日、オープンアクセス出版社のFrontiers社が、人工知能（AI）によって生成された図を掲載した論文記事を撤回したと発表しました。
対象となったのは、2024年2月13日付けで“Frontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology”誌に掲載された論文“Cellular functions of spermatogonial stem cells in relation to JAK/STAT signaling pathway”です。掲載後、画像生成AIであるMidjourneyを用いた図が掲載されているとして読者から懸念が表されました。
発表では、同誌の編集基準及び科学的厳密性の基準を満たさないとして、論文を撤回することとしたとあります。また、査読者の一人が図について懸念を示し、著者に修正を要求していたが、著者はこれに応じなかったことが判明したとあり、同社は査読プロセスがなぜ機能しなかったか調査中であるとしています。
