2022年4月7日、米国下院監視・政府改革委員会（House Committee on Oversight and Reform）の小委員会“Civil Rights and Civil Liberties”が、禁書や検閲に関して公聴会を開催しました。
ペンシルバニア州をはじめとする一部の州で団体や立法者が学校や公共図書館から本を排除させる運動を進めている影響で、全国的に禁書や検閲の動きが加速しており、2021年は過去20年の中で件数が最多となっていること等を背景に実施されました。
公聴会では学生や教師等が証言を行い、禁書や検閲の影響について、少数派や特殊な背景を持つ人の歴史を知ることができなくなるという意見、LGBTQの子どもが自身について知るということができなくなるという意見、自分の子どもにどのような本が適切かという親の考えが別の親の考えを妨げてはならないという意見等が出されました。
また、4月8日、米国図書館協会（ALA）が、公聴会の予告が出された翌日の4月5日付けで小委員会に対して意見書を提出していたことを発表しました。意見書では、禁書は憲法違反であり個人の自由や読者の権利を損なうこと、読者の年齢や興味に応じて様々な資料を扱うという図書館の職業基準において禁書は不要であること、禁書や検閲の取り組みの中には、幅広い資料を提供する図書館員への罰金や訴追を提案するものもあり、それらが有害であること等が述べられています。
