2016年4月5日、イスラエル国立図書館は、2020年に開館する予定の新館の建設に向け、定礎式を開催することを発表しています。
当日は閉館時間を17:30に早め、定礎式の模様は同館のウェブサイト及びFacebookのページで実況するとのことです。
同館は「21世紀の図書館」としてリニューアルされるとされ、研究センター、屋内・屋外で文教活動が行える場、デジタル体験ができるホール等を備えるとされ、のべ約3万4,000㎡、地上2階、地下4階建とのことで、2019年に建設を終えることが予定されています。
2001年に米国のプリツカー賞を獲得したスイスのヘルツォーク&ド・ムーロン（Herzog & de Meuron）によるデザインとのことで、ヘルツォーク&ド・ムーロンのウェブサイトなどではイメージが公開されています。
