2011年12月に、米国議会図書館（LC）が、発音区別記号（diacritical marks）の使用法等に関する日本語のALA-LC翻字表の改訂案と、その説明文書“Clarification of LC practice concerning the use of diacritical marks in Japanese romanization”を公表し、意見を求めていました。この提案に対して、2012年1月22日、東亜図書館協会（CEAL）が、1月初頭に実施した調査結果に基づいた回答書を発表しました。
