2020年6月16日、ドイツ図書館協会（Deutschen Bibliotheksverbandes：DBV）とドイツテレコム財団（Deutsche Telekom Stiftung）は、“Bibliothek des Jahres（Library of the Year）”の2020年受賞館として、ドイツ国立科学技術図書館（TIB）を選出したことを発表しました。
また、初めての試みとなる優秀な小規模自治体・地域の図書館を表彰する“Bibliothek des Jahres in kleinen Kommunen und Regionen”に、テューリンゲン州のゴータ市立図書館（Stadtbibliothek Gotha）を選出したことを併せて発表しています。
TIBについては、アナログ・デジタル双方における優れたサービスの展開と、戦略的なオープンサイエンスへの転換・オープンアクセス・研究データ・デジタル長期保存といった分野における同館の際立った取り組みが評価されました。副賞として2万ユーロが授与されます。
人口4万6,000人のゴータ市の図書館は、子ども・ヤングアダルト層から高齢者世代まで、多様な利用者層に応じて優れた教育やメディア事業を展開していることが評価されました。副賞として7,000ユーロが授与されます。
両館への授与式は2020年10月24日に行われます。
