2016年6月24日、オープンソースの図書館サービスプラットフォーム（Library Services Platform：LSP）を、図書館、サービスプロバイダー、技術開発者の協同によるコミュニティベースで開発するイニシアチブ“FOLIO”（Future of Libraries is Open）の始動が発表されました。
FOLIOの開発などに関しては、EBSCO社が主要な出資者となっており、デンマークのソフトウェア開発会社Index Dataが開発に携わっているほか、このイニシアチブには、Open Library Environment (OLE)や、ByWater社、Relais社、SirsiDynix社などが加わっています。
2016年8月にGitHub上で基盤となるプラットフォームのコードが公開され、その後順次拡張機能のコードがリリースされる予定となっています。
現在ウェブサイトも立ち上げられており、イニシアチブへの参加が呼びかけられています。
