2026年6月10日、Springer Nature社が、高品質な研究成果の件数に基づき研究機関や国等をランキング形式で示したNature Index Research Leadersの2026年版の公開を発表しました。
2026年は、対象とする研究分野を、従来の自然科学及び健康科学に加えて応用科学及び社会科学に拡大したほか、算出方法の見直しが行われたとされます。
日本に関しては、世界の国・地域別では前年に引き続き5位であり、2つの大学（研究機関）、7つの政府機関、7つの企業が、各部門のランキングトップ100にランクインしています。
