2025年12月18日、米国会計検査院（GAO）が米国の公共図書館の施設や設備の現状に関する調査報告書“PUBLIC LIBRARIES : Many Buildings Are Reported to Be in Poor Condition, with Increasing Deferred Maintenance”を公表しました。
同国における図書館施設の状況を調査し、施設の改修に要するコストや課題を分析すること等を目的としたものとあります。全米50州、コロンビア特別区及び海外領土にある約1万6,400の公共図書館を対象としたアンケートのほか、一部の図書館を対象とした訪問調査、米国図書館協会（ALA）等の図書館関係者へのインタビューが実施されました。
主な調査結果としては、全体のおよそ38％（約6,000館）において空調システム等少なくとも一つの設備が好ましくない状態にあり、61％（約9,800館）が健康・安全上の懸念がありうる設備又は構造物を有していること等が挙げられています。
