米国議会図書館（LC）が、米国を代表する作曲家・ガーシュウィン兄弟（Ira Gershwin，George Gershwin）にちなみ、ポピュラー音楽で世界の文化に大きな影響を与えた作曲家・演奏家に対し授賞するガーシュウィン賞を創設しました。その栄えある第1回受賞者として、Simon & Garfunkelで知られるポール・サイモン（Simon Paul）が選ばれました。これを記念したコンサートの実施、特設ウェブサイトの創設、文化・歴史・芸術的に優れた音楽作品を録音保存する“National Recording Registry”への作品の登録（サイモンの場合は1986年の作品“graceland”）などが行われます。
