2014年5月19日、米国の博物館・図書館サービス機構（IMLS）が、米国で現在活動継続中の博物館数に関する推計を発表しました。
発表によれば35,144の博物館が活動中であり、これは1990年代の同様の推計（17,500館）の2倍以上であるとのことです。各博物館のデータは” Museum Universe Data File”と題してオンライン公開されています。
