毎年9月8日はユネスコの定める「国際識字デー（International Literacy Day）」で、2015年のテーマは「識字と持続可能な社会」（Literacy and Sustainable Societies） とのことです。
2015年9月8日から9日にかけてユネスコ本部において事務局長が来席して2015年ユネスコ国際識字賞授賞式などイベントが実施されるとのことです。
2015年のユネスコ国際識字賞の授賞団体は以下の通りとのことです。
・世宗王識字賞（The UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prizes）
‘Literacy in Local Language, a Springboard for Gender Equality’（モザンビーク）
‘Open School Programme’（スリランカ）
