2024年10月2日、オープンアクセス（OA）出版社・PLOSが、ゴードン・アンド・ベティ・ムーア財団とロバート・ウッド・ジョンソン財団の支援を受け、18か月間の予定でオープンサイエンスの展開に向けて新たな研究・モデル設計のプロジェクトを開始すると発表しました。
プロジェクトでは、研究データなど論文以外のあらゆる形態の学術的貢献も評価する新しい研究出版モデルの設計に取り組むほか、研究成果の出版における障壁となっている論文処理費用（APC）に依らない、公平なビジネスモデルの開発を行うとしています。
