Status of Libraries in the Aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake (As of April 20, 2021)

 

This report introduces major information on status of libraries in the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake between mid-September 2020 to mid-April 2021, following past Current Awareness-E reports (see E2299 and others).

●Activities of Libraries in Disaster Affected Regions

The Great East Japan Earthquake and Nuclear Disaster Memorial Museum (Futaba Town, Fukushima Prefecture), a facility to pass on the disaster experience, opened on September 20, 2020.

Hinagiku took over the data of “The Archives of the Agricultural, Fishery and Forestry Cooperative Organizations’ Activities for the Restoration from the Great East Japan Earthquake” and released the archive on March 4, 2021. The archives were managed by Norinchukin Research Institute Co., Ltd. and was closed on November 30, 2020.

On March 31, 2021, with the closure of the “Red Cross Nuclear Disaster Resource Center Digital Archives,” Hinagiku took over and released the data of the digital archives.

On March 1, 2021, Hidenori Watanave Laboratory of University of Tokyo Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies and Iwate Nippo Co., Ltd. together released a digital archive “We Shall Never Forget: The 10-year Struggle of Earthquake Survivors (忘れない:震災遺族10年の軌跡).” An updated version of “We Shall Never Forget: Last Movements of Tsunami Disaster Victims (忘れない:震災犠牲者の行動記録)” released in 2016, was also made public.

On March 9, 2021, Urayasu Central Public Library (Chiba Prefecture) released “Records of the Great East Japan Earthquake in Urayasu City – Testimonies from Occurrence of the Disaster to Recovery (浦安市における東日本大震災の記録~発災から復旧までの証言~)” on “Urayasu Disaster Archive.” This is a record of testimonies on responses and situations of recovery at the time of the Great East Japan Earthquake.

On February 27 and 28, 2021, an exhibition “100,000 Books Tell the Great East Japan Earthquake – ‘Bringing Disaster Records to Libraries’ Campaign (10万冊が語りかける 東日本大震災~「震災記録を図書館に」キャンペーン~) was held at Sendai Mediateque. This was a disaster archive exhibition of libraries in disaster affected regions commemorating the tenth anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake. The exhibition was hosted by eight libraries participating in the collaborative campaign launched with the Great East Japan Earthquake “Bringing Disaster Records to Libraries”: Iwate Prefectural Library, Miyagi Prefectural Library, Fukushima Prefectural Library, Sendai City Public Library(仙台市民図書館), Iwate University Library, Tohoku University Library, Fukushima University Library, and Disaster Information Laboratory of the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience.

An online symposium “Present and Future of Natural History Sample Rescue (自然史標本レスキューの現在地点とこれから)” was held on November 22, 2020. The event was hosted by the executive committee of “Project on Development of Conservation and Restoration Techniques for Cultural Properties Damaged by Tsunami and Collaboration of Specialized Institutions (津波により被災した文化財の保存修復技術の構築と専門機関の連携に関するプロジェクト)” in which Iwate Prefecture Museum as the core institution.
