世界最大の英語辞典である『オックスフォード英語辞典』（Oxford English Dictionary: OED）のオンライン版が、2013年12月の更新で新たに”emoji” （絵文字）を採録したと発表されています。
今回の更新では新たに500以上の言葉が取り入れられていますが、その中の一つとして”emoji”を採録したことが、OEDのサイトで紹介されました。”emoji”は既に、言葉の現在の使用法に着目した辞書であるOxford Dictionaries Online（ODO）には採録されていましたが、今回採録されたOEDは現在の用例だけではなく、言葉の意味の変遷などにも注目した辞書です。無料で閲覧可能なOEDの記事概要の中では、”emoji”は1928年かそれ以前に現れた言葉で、1990年代には”small digital image or icon used to express an idea, emotion, etc. in electronic communications”という意味で使われるようになった、とされています。なお、全文の閲覧には購読契約か、契約している図書館の利用者カードが必要です。
