2011年6月2日に、全米科学アカデミー（NAS）や全米技術アカデミー（NAE）など、米国の4つの学術団体の出版局である全米アカデミー出版局（National Academies Press）が、発行しているPDF版の書籍4,000タイトル以上を無料で提供すると発表しています。なお、印刷版の書籍については従来通り有料のようです。
