2022年8月4日、米国大統領府科学技術政策局（OSTP）が、サル痘に関する研究とデータの即時公開を求める声明を発表しました。
サル痘に関して、2022年7月23日に世界保健機関（WHO）が「国際的に懸念される公衆衛生上の緊急事態」（PHEIC）を宣言しました。声明の中では、ウイルスの拡散阻止、感染拡大への対応、コミュニティの保護のためには、国際的な協力による対応が必要であると指摘しています。
米国の他、オーストラリア、ブラジル、カナダ、ガーナ、フランス、日本、韓国等を含む20か国と欧州委員会（EC）の科学技術関連のリーダーやアドバイザーに対して、サル痘に関する研究とデータの即時公開を学術出版社へ要請するよう求めています。
