英・JiscのLOCH Pathfinder projectのプロジェクトオフィサーで、エジンバラ大学のアンドリュー（Theo Andrew）氏が、同学が一括管理しているファンドからは支払われなかったAPCs（論文処理費用）を特定することで、研究者が個人で支払ったAPCs（APCs paid in the wild）に関する情報を集約した方法について述べた論文“Improving estimates of the total cost of publication by recognising ‘APCs paid in the wild’”が出版後査読誌Winnowerでオープンレビューに付せられています。
論文では、大学・機関による一括支払いとは別に研究者が個別に支払っているAPCsは、出版の総コストの20％を超えると推定されていて、この追加のコストは、組織が出版社とオープンアクセス（OA）出版の公正な相殺協定を締結する上で考慮に入れる必要があると指定しています。
