2012年12月10日、英国公認会計士協会（Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy：CIPFA）が、2011-2012年の公共図書館統計を発表しました。
英国では近年、政府の緊縮財政による公共図書館の閉鎖が問題となっていますが、この統計によると、この1年間で図書館（library service point）の数が201減少したということが分かりました。2010-2011年においては減少数は146で、減少率が上昇しています。（なお、library service pointについては、“any library, static or mobile, through which the public library authority provides or directly manages a service to the general public”と説明されています。）
その他にも、予算減、職員の減少、ボランティアの増加、来館者数および貸出数の減少（子どもによるフィクションの貸出のみ微増）がみられます。
英Guardian紙も“UK lost more than 200 libraries in 2012”と報じています。
