2008年10月24日から10月31日までの1週間、ドイツでは初の全国規模の図書館キャンペーン「ドイツは読む。集合場所は図書館（Deutschland liest. Treffpunkt Bibliothek）」が開催されました。このキャンペーンには、4,500以上の図書館がのべ15,000時間以上のプログラムを実施し、大成功に終わったとのことです。
この1週間は、24日の「図書館の日」の“Bibliothek des Jahres（Library of the Year）”の発表（受賞はバイエルン州立図書館）から始まり、31日のドイツ国立図書館（在ライプチヒ）で行われた公開パネルディスカッション「昨日の教育モデル？未来の図書館（Bildungsmodell von gestern? Die Zukunft der Bibliotheken）」（ラジオ中継あり）で、幕を閉じました。ドイツ図書館協会のベーガー（Gabriele Beger）会長は、このキャンペーンを2009年も行うべきだとしています。
