英国のバーミンガム公共図書館（Library of Birmingham）が、2013年9月3日に開館します。建築費は約1億8,800万ポンドとされ、欧州最大の公共図書館と報じられています。前身となる中央図書館（Birmingham Central Library）からの資料の搬送は2013年の4月に開始しましたが、その数は66,000箱以上にのぼったようです。
開館のセレモニーでは、パキスタン出身でバーミンガムの病院（クイーン・エリザベス病院）で治療を受けてきたマララ・ユサフザイ（Malala Yousafzai）さんが、最後の1冊として「アルケミスト」（パウロ・コエーリョ著）を棚に置くようです。
